Regional Ministry of Culture holds two film series at the Film Archive to pay tribute to Margarita Lozano and to recall Orson Welles in his centenary

Great classics such as ‘Casablanca’, ‘Gilda’, ‘Some Like It Hot’, ‘Welcome Mr. Marshall!’ and ‘E.T.’ will be screened until June

The Film Archive of the Region of Murcia has organised new series for the coming months, such as the one devoted to the actress from Lorca Margarita Lozano. They commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Orson Welles, the 70th anniversary of the ending of the Second World War or the series titled ‘A life in film: Cinema within cinema’, a nod to this industry.

Likewise, ‘The film of your life’, a series dedicated to classic films, can be watched again until June along with the usual series ‘Family-friendly Films, ‘Current Affairs’, ‘Contemporary Films in Spanish’, ‘Murcian filmmakers’ and ‘The Filmed Memory’, focused on the screening of material from the film archive.

The best of Welles

The two main characters of the Film Archive for the next months will be American director and actor Orson Welles and actress Margarita Lozano, born in Tétouan and raised in Lorca, recently awarded an Honorary Doctoral Degree by the University of Murcia.

Next 6th May marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of Welles, recognised as one of the greatest filmmakers in history, and the Regional Ministry of Culture will conmemorate him with a vast series of nearly twenty films, including ‘Citizen Cane’, ‘Touch of Evil’, ‘The Lady From Shanghai’, ‘The Third Man’ and ‘Falstaff - Chimes at Midnight’, in addition to other less well-known such as ‘Don Quixote’, a film that Jesús Franco finished shooting, or the documentary for BBC on the Basque Country.

Some of the productions in which Lozano participated over half a century of her professional career will be screened at the Film Archive, such as Buñuel’s classic ‘Viridiana’ (1961), the Western ‘A Fistful of Dollars’ (Leone, 1964), ‘The Hatchet’ (Muresan, 1969), ‘The Moro Affair’ (Ferrara, 1986) and her last film, ‘Octavia’ (Martín Patino, 2002). The homage to the actress is completed with screenings in other venues such as Nuevo Teatro Circo and Cajamurcia Culture Room.

‘Cinema within Cinema’ series will be represented by ‘The Bad and the Beautiful’ (Minnelli, 1952), ‘Day for Night’ (Truffaut, 1973) and ‘Ed Wood’ (Burton, 1994), among others. Some of the most distinguished stories that commemorate the 70th anniversary of the ending of the Second World War are ‘The Damned’ (Visconti, 1969), ‘Casablanca’ (Curtiz, 1942), ‘Cross of Iron’ (Peckimpah, 1977) and ‘The Bridge on the River Kwai’ (Lean, 1957).

Cinema Classics

The usual series of the Film Archive, such as ‘Family-friendly Films’ or the one devoted to classic films, which on this occasion will be called ‘The Film of your Life’, will remain on schedule and memorable films will be screened including ‘E.T’ (Spielberg, 1982), ‘Singin' in the Rain’ (Donen and Kelly, 1952), ‘Gilda’ (Vidor, 1946), ‘It Happened One Night’ (Capra, 1934), ‘Some Like It Hot’ (Wilder, 1959) and ‘Welcome, Mr. Marshall!’ (Berlanga, 1953).

‘Contemporary Films in Spanish’ and ‘Current Affairs’ will bring together some of the best films of recent times: ‘The Wonders’, Cannes Grand Prix, ‘The Little House’ and ‘Difret’, awarded in Berlin, and ‘Map to the Stars’, for which actress Julianne Moore was awarded in Cannes and Sitges.
